As Christians, the resurrection of Jesus Christ is a central pillar of our faith. It signifies victory over sin and death, offering hope and redemption to all who believe. But what happened in the 40 days following this momentous event? The Bible provides glimpses into Jesus' post-resurrection activities, shedding light on his continued ministry and interactions with his disciples. Let's explore what Jesus did during these crucial 40 days and the significance of his actions for believers today.

  1. Appearances to His Disciples: One of the primary activities of Jesus during the 40 days after the resurrection was appearing to his disciples. He reassured them of his victory over death, confirmed his identity as the risen Lord, and commissioned them for the work ahead. These encounters brought joy, encouragement, and renewed faith to his followers, equipping them for the tasks that lay ahead. Luke 24:36-43 (NIV) "While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, 'Peace be with you.' They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. He said to them, 'Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.' When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, 'Do you have anything here to eat?' They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate it in their presence."

  2. Teaching and Expounding Scripture: Jesus continued to teach and expound Scripture to his disciples during this period. He illuminated the prophecies concerning himself, helping them understand the significance of his death and resurrection in light of God's redemptive plan. These teachings laid the foundation for the early Christian community and provided guidance for spreading the message of the Gospel. Luke 24:27 (NIV) "And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself."

  3. Preparation for Pentecost: The 40 days after the resurrection also included preparation for the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Jesus instructed his disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the promised gift of the Holy Spirit, who would empower them for ministry and bear witness to the truth of the Gospel. This period of waiting was essential for the birth of the Church and the fulfillment of Jesus' mission on earth. Acts 1:4-5 (NIV) "On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: 'Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'"

  4. Commissioning His Disciples: Jesus used this time to commission his disciples for the task of making disciples of all nations. He entrusted them with the Great Commission, instructing them to go and proclaim the good news of salvation to the ends of the earth. This commissioning marked the beginning of the Church's mission to spread the Gospel and make disciples of every nation, tribe, and tongue. Matthew 28:18-20 (NIV) "Then Jesus came to them and said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.'"

  5. Ascension into Heaven: The 40 days culminated in Jesus' ascension into heaven - known as Ascension Day, where he took his rightful place at the right hand of God the Father. This event signified the completion of his earthly ministry and the beginning of his reign as the exalted Lord and Savior. As believers, we look forward to the day when we will join him in his kingdom, experiencing the fullness of redemption and eternal life. Acts 1:9-11 (NIV) "After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 'Men of Galilee,' they said, 'why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.'"

The 40 days after the resurrection were a time of profound significance in the life of Jesus and his followers. During this period, Jesus continued to minister to his disciples, prepare them for the coming of the Holy Spirit, and commission them for the work of spreading the Gospel to the ends of the earth. As we reflect on Jesus' post-resurrection activities, may we be inspired to follow his example, proclaiming the good news of salvation and making disciples in his name.
