How to Keep Kids Quiet in Church

A beautiful Sunday, a full church, and you are looking forward to a blessed family time with God. But then, it starts (again)! The service did not even begin yet and your kids are already starting to get restless. And all you can tell yourself is "Oh, great!" ... Don't worry! We all have been there!

It can be challenging when kids get restless or loud during the mass. Kids are full of energy, and it is difficult for them to sit still for a long period of time. The regular church services are not planned towards young children and is thus not engaging for them. So, what can you do to keep your kids calm during the service?

Here are some great ideas for you that can help.

12 Tips to Keep Kids Quiet At Church

Keeping Children Silent in Worship

  • Depending on their age, talk with your kids beforehand about the expectations of behavior in church. Let them know that it is a place of prayer and respect, and that we behave calm and respectful.

  • If you are not able to control them, take a quick walk outside, or a chat in the lobby can help them reset their behavior.

  • Let you little one have a toy or few toys (that make no sound) to keep them occupied.

  • Create a special activity bag - even a special "Sunday activity bag" - for each child with a few non-messy activities.

  • Give them coloring books and some crayons or colored pencils. If you choose a Christian coloring book they can also learn more about our faith.

  • Get an activity book to keep them occupied. Again, choosing a Christian activity book would be perfect for this situation.

Quiet Church Activities for Kids

  • Purchase or make a special “Mass book” for each child with Bible stories and activities related to the readings.

  • Encourage the kids to be active participants in the service by singing along with the hymns and reciting the prayers.

  • If the little ones are old enough let them follow along the mass book, if a mass book is available.

  • Have the children take turns leading the family in the prayers.

  • Make mass a fun learning experience by having the kids find the readings and Gospel.

  • Promise them you will reward them with extra playtime, a little treat, or similar if they behave well at church.

These tips will definitely help you and your family to enjoy church services together and make church a fun and engaging place for children of all ages! See it for yourself!
